What you will be doing JOB DESCRIPTION Post-Doctoral Fellowship Computational Knee/ACL Biomechanics Hospital for Special Surgery Biomechanics Department New York City, NY, USA Position start date: Applications will be reviewed until position is filled. Position duration: Two years, pending annual review Degree Requirement: PhD in Biomechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent specialty; (exceptional MS-level applicants to be considered) The mission of the Biomechanics Department at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is to enable world-class orthopaedic care through innovative engineering. In this project, we are continuing to scale-up our physics-based, computational knee modeling workflow to develop a new digital-twin approach to guide anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk assessment, surgical decision making for ACL reconstruction, and rehabilitation after surgery. Our long-term goal is to change the paradigm of clinical care by integrating comprehensive, personalized, physics-based computational tools to augment and enhance clinical decision making in the pathway of clinical care of ACL patients. The mechanistic approach requires (a) incorporating image data from hundreds of subjects to identify anatomical factors associated with knee pathomechanics contributing to non-contact ACL injury and reinjury of ACL grafts; (b) integrating patient-specific knee kinetics obtained through motion analysis into our computational knee models; and (c) developing consensus-based recommendations for reproducibility in knee modeling. The scientific goals are two-fold: 1) to identify how both anatomical factors (i.e., joint geometry and laxity) and functional factors (e.g., knee kinetics) relate to knee kinematics and ACL loading in young athletes and 2) to ensure reproducibility in modeling and simulation of the knee through a consensus-based, NIH-funded, multi-institutional effort. This project is conducted in close collaboration with the Sports Medicine Service at HSS. It integrates physics-based computer simulation, epidemiology, clinical data, and uncertainty analysis. The work is clinical and translational necessitating a fellow with strong technical aptitude, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams. The fellow will be supervised by Carl Imhauser, PhD in the Biomechanics Department and our multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, bioengineers, clinical epidemiologists, and statisticians. E.g., SolidWorks, ProEngineer, GEOMAGICS, and DesignX Experience in clinical and translational biomechanics research Exceptional written, spoken, and interpersonal communication skills Experience in project management and organization Desirable qualifications: Knowledge of applied optimization and statistical techniques (i.e., machine learning) Training in computer science and software architecture Experience in experimental biomechanics testing Graduate course work in statistics including Bayesian methods Experience coding statistical software (for example: R) Extensive experience (≥3 yrs an asset) using multibody dynamics software including MSC ADAMS and associated scripting languages Experience in image processing methods including exposure to commercial packages for 3D reconstruction of medical image data such as MIMICS Non-Discrimination Policy Hospital for Special Surgery is committed to providing high quality care and skilled, compassionate, reliable service to our community in a safe and healing environment. About Cartesia Our mission is to build the next generation of AI: ubiquitous, interactive intelligence that runs wherever you are. Today, not even the best models can continuously process and reason over a year-long stream of audio, video and text-1B text tokens, 10B audio tokens and 1T video tokens-let alone do this on-device. We're pioneering the model architectures that will make this possible. Our founding team met as PhDs at the Stanford AI Lab, where we invented State Space Models or SSMs, a new primitive for training efficient, large-scale foundation models. Our team combines deep expertise in model innovation and systems engineering paired with a design-minded product engineering team to build and ship cutting edge models and experiences. We're funded by leading investors at Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, along with Factory, Conviction, A Star, General Catalyst, SV Angel, Databricks and others. We're fortunate to have the support of many amazing advisors, and 90+ angels across many industries, including the world's foremost experts in AI. Cartesia's Post-Training team is developing the methods and systems that make multimodal models truly adaptive, aligned, and grounded in human intent. As a Researcher on the Post-Training team, you'll work at the intersection of machine learning research, alignment, and infrastructure, designing new techniques for preference optimization, model evaluation, and feedback-driven learning. You'll explore how feedback signals can guide models to reason more effectively across modalities, and you'll build the infrastructure to measure and improve these behaviors at scale. Your work will directly shape how Cartesia's foundation models learn, improve, and ultimately connect with people. Your Impact Own research initiatives to improve the alignment and capabilities of multimodal models Develop new post-training methods and evaluation frameworks to measure model improvement Partner closely with research, product, and platform teams to define best practices for creating specialized models Implement, debug, and scale experimental systems to ensure reliability and reproducibility across training runs Translate research findings into production-ready systems that enhance model reasoning, consistency, and human alignment What You Bring Deep knowledge of preference optimization and alignment methods, including RLHF and related approaches Experience designing evaluations and metrics for generative or multimodal models Strong engineering and debugging skills, with experience building or scaling complex ML systems Ability to trace and diagnose complex behaviors in model performance across the training and evaluation pipeline Nice To Have Experience with multimodal model training (e.g., text, audio, or vision-language models) Contributions to alignment research or open-source projects related to model evaluation or fine-tuning Background in designing or implementing human-in-the-loop evaluation systems Our Culture We're an in-person team based out of San Francisco.
