The gasifier AVI team is tasked with building an electronics suite specifically for the Starship gasifier and future RCS systems. As an Electrical Test and Reliability Engineer on Starlink, you’ll sit at the intersection of electrical, mechanical, thermal analysis, software, and antenna engineering - ultimately ensuring that our satellite hardware can withstand the harsh environment of space and maintain communication with millions of users on a global scale. There are several sub-teams within the larger Starlink hardware engineering group at our Redmond facility, each with a different area of focus. These teams work with a wide range of technical disciplines including high-speed digital communication, network system integration, power systems integration, RF systems, avionics, network computers, power electronics, failure analysis, on-orbit reliability, and testing automation. Your placement on these teams will be determined throughout the interviewing process after factoring in technical fit, expertise, and your personal preference. Monitors testing status daily; gathers feedback from all test technicians. Follow AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams to perform testing of main electrical distribution AC/DC systems for power distribution control houses and panels. Work closely with engineering and production team members to ensure accurate, efficient and timely execution of required testing work Be able to troubleshoot assembly, wiring and testing problems Performs full functional testing on various circuits including HVAC system, lighting, receptacles, fans, fire alarm systems, battery system, and meggering of cables. Perform complete testing including current/voltage injections, Hi-Potential Testing, I/O checks and circuit breaker simulation testing on Relay Panels and Switchgear. Perform Factory Acceptance Testing with customer as required. Perform customer site visits to troubleshoot and resolve any field issues that may arise. Drafts detailed technical reports to present findings; based on findings, recommends modifications needed to correct production problems Perform other related duties as assigned The experience we’re looking to add to our team: High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree in electrical engineering or related field required. Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and single line diagrams. Knowledge in testing of three phase AC and DC control circuits. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER (STARSHIP AVIONICS)

The Starship team supports the mission to revolutionize orbital flight and space travel, opening access for humankind to establish new frontiers in space and ultimately become a multi-planetary species. Our team builds some of the most advanced electronics ever flown in space, at a cost and rate previously considered unthinkable in the space industry. Specifically, the Starship avionics team is responsible for designing a Starship avionics system that is optimized for high reliability at a low mass and cost.

The gasifier AVI team is tasked with building an electronics suite specifically for the Starship gasifier and future RCS systems. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Rapidly develop high-reliability electronics for rockets and spacecraft
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team to design and field electronics for command and control of next generation gasifier and RCS systems
  • Drive system trades, requirements capture, component selection, analysis, schematic capture, prototyping, bring-up, debugging, documentation, manufacturing, and test of printed circuits boards and other electromechanical assemblies
  • Rapidly develop high-reliability digital and power electronics for rockets and spacecraft
  • Create development and qualification testing campaigns and exercise designs to their limits
  • Support hardware through production, integration, and flight
  • Work with experts from other teams and departments to drive changes that make the system more efficient, manufacturable, and reliable. Challenge assumptions and build strong professional relationships 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, industrial, systems, or computer engineering
  • 1+ years of experience designing, building, or testing circuit boards or other electronics (research, internships and extracurricular academic projects qualify)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Passion for spaceflight and curiosity for electronics in high-reliability applications
  • Excitement for making systems smarter, better, faster, cheaper
  • Experience making products or systems work with minimal time and resources
  • Experience developing fundamentally new hardware, not just incrementally updating legacy hardware
  • Experience with circuit board layout, especially for switching power converters or high-speed digital applications
  • Experience designing switching power converters, power magnetics, analog control loops, solid state load switches, motor inverters, EMI/EMC compliance, or sensor signal conditioning circuits
  • Experience with high voltage devices, lithium ion batteries, or power distribution optimization
  • Experience with high performance digital processors, FPGAs, memory chips, or network switches
  • Experience with circuit board design-for-manufacturing or productization of electronics
  • Experience with automating hardware development functions (e.g. scripting to control benchtop equipment or to accelerate analysis or simulation)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and autonomously driven environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:    Electrical Engineer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year    Electrical Engineer/Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00/per year    Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
