POSITION SUMMARY: The Electrical Engineer III is a senior member of the Sustaining Engineering team responsible for maintaining and improving existing electronic products used in industrial and medical-related applications. This role involves supporting manufacturing, resolving technical issues in production, addressing component obsolescence, and updating product designs as necessary. This individual is expected to have a strong background in RF-enabled systems, PCB design (schematic capture and layout), and hands-on troubleshooting. Experience in embedded systems development and product design is highly valued. A working knowledge of industry safety and communication standards (e.g., IEC, FCC, EMC/EMI compliance, ISO/UL) is desirable. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Support production and fielded products through electrical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions. Address component obsolescence by identifying replacements, revalidating circuits, and updating documentation. Develop and maintain electrical design artifacts, including schematics, PCB layouts, and component libraries. Create or update test fixtures and work instructions to support manufacturing and product testing. Support and troubleshoot RF circuitry. Contribute to embedded hardware/software integration and debugging when required. Collaborate with mechanical, software, and quality teams to resolve design and production issues. Lead or support engineering change requests (ECRs) and product documentation updates. Recommend improvements to existing products for reliability, cost, manufacturability, or compliance. Assist in qualifying components and ensuring adherence to applicable safety and performance standards. Mentor junior engineers and support cross-functional training in troubleshooting and design best practices. Participate in internal reviews, audits, and support CAPA (corrective and preventive action) activities as needed. May lead medium- to large-scale projects within the sustaining engineering scope. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Minimum 5-7 years of experience in electronics design, sustaining engineering, or manufacturing support. Strong skills in schematic capture and PCB layout using industry-standard tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD). Proficient in electrical troubleshooting at the component and system level. Experience with RF design or RF-enabled systems and associated measurement instruments (e.g. Spectrum Analyzer, VNA, etc) Familiarity with embedded system hardware; software/firmware experience is a plus. Effective communication and collaboration skills across engineering and operations teams. Strong documentation skills and attention to detail. Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in an electronics manufacturing environment supporting high-reliability or safety-critical products. Knowledge of industry safety and communication standards (e.g., IEC, FCC, ISO, UL, EMC/EMI compliance). Understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM), testability (DFT), and lifecycle management. Exposure to configuration/change management tools and structured engineering workflows. Familiarity with root cause analysis methodologies such as 8D, Fishbone, or 5 Whys. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and work at a computer or lab bench. Manual dexterity for handling small components and tools. May occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Normal color vision and visual acuity required for component identification and inspection. This is a hybrid role, based out of the Nieto-Jones Performance Center in Schaumburg, IL. #LI-Hybrid - Monday and Friday are remote, Tuesday through Thursday are in-office collaboration days. As an Electrical Engineer II, you will: Execute electrical circuit design and schematic entry, using Altium, within electrical engineering design team; Support printed circuit board development throughout new product development process; Execute schematic design changes and Engineering Change Orders following production launch. Perform circuit analysis including worst-case/tolerance analysis, power dissipation, and stress-analysis as member of the electrical design team. Develop and execute characterization tests for a variety of rotating machines, include PM synchronous machines, AC induction machine and alternators. Support Engineering Field Service organization: Direct/guide troubleshooting efforts in the field; Participate via conference call with service techs to address field issues and determine root-cause. Participate as a member of cross-functional design team(s) to review and provide feedback re: electrical designs throughout the PCBA design and release process. Collaborate within the electrical engineering teams on engineering documentation Evaluate and test critical electronics components of schematic designs through simulation software and bench level testing prior to schematic release Perform and document detailed board level validation tests using tools such as oscilloscopes, meters and load boxes Direct engineering technicians in defined tests including EMC, validation and reliability. Employing extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices and devising new approaches to problems encountered, plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of major projects such as equipment design and development, materials tests, preparation of specifications, applications studies, analyses of system or process troubles, research investigations, system planning studies, and preparation of technical reports. Responsible for overseeing and managing complex projects. Duties require a complete knowledge of accepted practices in the areas of all substation equipment, protective relaying systems, reclosers, regulators, capacitors, and broad knowledge of principles and practices in related specialties to resolve a variety of highly complex problems, such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of standard materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Duties also require project management skills, employee development, and training. Has supervisory guidance in terms of specific objectives and critical issues and has authority to make independent decisions on engineering practices and methods. Main Responsibilities: Technician training and development: Assess employee skill level across all job functions and identify development areas. Set up training for all equipment and testing for such things as substation entry, transformers, breakers, reclosers, CCVTs, RTUs, capacitors, regulators, MOABs, batteries, and all protective relaying systems. Set up training for test equipment/processes for such things as relay testing/commissioning, power factor testing, recloser testing, contact resistance testing, phasing, ground grid testing, DGA/oil sampling, meggering, hi-pot testing, carrier/TTR testing, soil resistivity testing, SFRA, and trip testing. Work independently in the lab with employees as needed. Provide any needed training or support for Test Department supervision or other departments as needed. Provide on-site oversight for projects as needed. Ensure high-quality work is being performed and proper procedures and policies are followed, and provide technical and supervisory support as needed. Provide field storm support as needed for the distribution and transmission system. Includes substation response, scouting outage/damage calls, and managing circuit restoration. Provide on-site technical and supervisory support for severe emergencies, outages, and other extenuating circumstances (mobile installation, transformer lockouts, equipment failures, etc.). Provide on-site technical support as needed for mobile substation installs, trip testing, transformer testing, troubleshooting, test equipment troubleshooting, or any other technical support need. Introduce/Promote/Encourage Human Performance Concepts and Practices. Develop guides/training aids for all test department-related equipment and processes. Evaluate new equipment or procedures to be used to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity. Monitor current industry practices, trends, and procedures. Provide on-site technical support and consultation for substation projects being completed by contractors. Periodically visit job sites to ensure contractors are following best practices and standards. Assist with analyzing all test results/data and make recommendations. Prioritize results and make recommendations on next steps. Determine the timeframe for repairs/replacements for all non-critical or emergency equipment conditions. Make recommendations for long-term maintenance plans for aging or deteriorated equipment. Look for trends and equipment deterioration. Evaluate equipment status and remaining life. Suggest and recommend equipment replacement or repair. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Electrical Engineer III is a senior member of the Sustaining Engineering team responsible for maintaining and improving existing electronic products used in industrial and medical-related applications. This role involves supporting manufacturing, resolving technical issues in production, addressing component obsolescence, and updating product designs as necessary.

This individual is expected to have a strong background in RF-enabled systems, PCB design (schematic capture and layout), and hands-on troubleshooting. Experience in embedded systems development and product design is highly valued. A working knowledge of industry safety and communication standards (e.g., IEC, FCC, EMC/EMI compliance, ISO/UL) is desirable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support production and fielded products through electrical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Address component obsolescence by identifying replacements, revalidating circuits, and updating documentation.
  • Develop and maintain electrical design artifacts, including schematics, PCB layouts, and component libraries.
  • Create or update test fixtures and work instructions to support manufacturing and product testing.
  • Support and troubleshoot RF circuitry.
  • Contribute to embedded hardware/software integration and debugging when required.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and quality teams to resolve design and production issues.
  • Lead or support engineering change requests (ECRs) and product documentation updates.
  • Recommend improvements to existing products for reliability, cost, manufacturability, or compliance.
  • Assist in qualifying components and ensuring adherence to applicable safety and performance standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support cross-functional training in troubleshooting and design best practices.
  • Participate in internal reviews, audits, and support CAPA (corrective and preventive action) activities as needed.
  • May lead medium- to large-scale projects within the sustaining engineering scope.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in electronics design, sustaining engineering, or manufacturing support.
  • Strong skills in schematic capture and PCB layout using industry-standard tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD).
  • Proficient in electrical troubleshooting at the component and system level.
  • Experience with RF design or RF-enabled systems and associated measurement instruments (e.g. Spectrum Analyzer, VNA, etc)
  • Familiarity with embedded system hardware; software/firmware experience is a plus.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across engineering and operations teams.
  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in an electronics manufacturing environment supporting high-reliability or safety-critical products.
  • Knowledge of industry safety and communication standards (e.g., IEC, FCC, ISO, UL, EMC/EMI compliance).
  • Understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM), testability (DFT), and lifecycle management.
  • Exposure to configuration/change management tools and structured engineering workflows.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis methodologies such as 8D, Fishbone, or 5 Whys.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and work at a computer or lab bench.
  • Manual dexterity for handling small components and tools.
  • May occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Normal color vision and visual acuity required for component identification and inspection.
  • Work may occur in office and production environments, including exposure to moderate noise and standard lab equipment.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENT:

  • Occasional travel up to 10%, typically for supplier visits, field investigations, or training,
