Responsibilities will include: Lead the design of high voltage AC electrical systems, specifically for industrial substations (69kV to 345kV) and their integration with upstream transmission lines and downstream MV distribution. Review and evaluate the design of existing substations to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability. Develop single-line diagrams, physical layout and design, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations. Perform grid simulation and stability studies using industry standard tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner and similar software. Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs to support interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for new renewable and BESS projects. Perform short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies. In the role of Electrical Engineer, we'll count on you to: Coordinate work of the electrical design team on large institutional/industrial projects through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance Coordinate workload to complete the document on schedule Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines Review electrical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines Write/edit electrical specifications and select equipment, electrical systems and devices Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents Provide construction contract administration as needed Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Electrical Engineers, Electrical Coordinators or Technicians Perform other duties as needed Due to client contract requirements, US-born citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications A minimum of 3 years experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems) Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desired Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired but not required Experience designing healthcare systems Experience with Construction Administration Activities Revit experience is a must Prior working experience at an MEP or AE firm Experience with federal projects Local candidates preferred Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis Previous experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems) Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license. HDR Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Summer 2026 - Electrical Engineering intern to join our growing team in the Sacramento, CA office. The successful candidate would support electrical engineering design projects in Power within the disciplines of hydropower and/or substation.

As an Electrical Engineering intern at HDR, you will work with a team of licensed engineers, engineers in training, and technicians on different project types and with diverse professionals. Our goal will be to engage you in all facets of our work so that you will gain a better understanding of how your coursework is applied in real-world settings and inspire you to engage in a career in electrical engineering upon graduation.

In the role of Electrical Engineering Intern, we'll count on you to:

  • Assist in conducting analyses to develop electrical design options or recommendations, and may assist in the preparation of cost estimates, reports and design plans and specifications

  • Work on projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables

  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals' programs

  • Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures; utilize computer modeling software for electrical system analysis and design.

  • Perform assignments under the direct supervision of a professional, Project Manager, Electrical EIT and/or Technician.

  • Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry such as ETAP, Power Tools for Windows and EasyPower

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
  • Attention to detail
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
