Job Description

Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine founded in December 2022 and growing rapidly as one of the world's leading AI platforms. Perplexity has raised over $1B in venture investment from some of the world's most visionary and successful leaders, including Elad Gil, Daniel Gross, Jeff Bezos, Accel, IVP, NEA, NVIDIA, Samsung, and many more. Our objective is to build accurate, trustworthy AI that powers decision-making for people and assistive AI wherever decisions are being made. Throughout human history, change and innovation have always been driven by curious people. Today, curious people use Perplexity to answer more than 780 million queries every month-a number that's growing rapidly for one simple reason: everyone can be curious.

Perplexity is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow our highly-driven Agents engineering team. The Agents team consists of AI-savvy, full-stack engineers who leverage bleeding-edge models to build delightful agentic experiences within our most critical product surfaces.

In July 2025, Perplexity shipped Comet, the world's first agentic browser-and we're just getting started. Our vision is to empower our users with agents that can faithfully actualize their intent, however and wherever expressed, through open-ended interactions with the world. You will lead, grow, and support a team in solving many open problems in AI, including:

  • Designing and empowering agents to navigate the open internet;
  • Seamlessly transitioning agents between foreground and background to deliver maximum value for our users;
  • Designing optimal data representations and modes of interaction between agents and their environments;
  • Orchestration infrastructure that can bridge local and server-side context;
  • and much, much more.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering leadership across multiple layers of a rapidly growing product in the agents space.
  • Provide domain expertise and sharp technical/product intuition to guide the team's system architectures and product roadmaps.
  • Drive product reliability, code quality, AI evaluation, testing, and maintenance for the broader team.
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, and mentorship for a rapidly growing team. Develop rigorous interview pipelines and work closely with recruiting to source candidates.
  • Collaborate closely with the Core Research / Post-Training, Inference, Search, and Comet application teams.
  • Interface with the Perplexity co-founders to deliver strategic objectives that redefine what's possible in the AI industry.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundational familiarity with the full AI product stack.
  • Strong product intuition and taste for user experience excellence.
  • Strong background and hands-on technical experience with frontier models (the more relevant to open-world agents, the better).
  • Strong organizational skills for managing and delivering parallel technical projects; ability to guide highly-opinionated teams in making sound tradeoffs and prioritization decisions is critical.
  • Experience managing medium-sized engineering teams, including recruiting, growing, and retaining high-caliber talent.
  • Experience leveraging the right combination of open source, third-party, and in-house solutions.
  • 9+ years of general engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of experience developing and/or deploying frontier models in impactful ways.
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience.

The cash compensation range for this role is $250,000 - $325,000.

Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including, experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Equity: In addition to the base salary, equity may be part of the total compensation package.

Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents. Includes a 401(k) plan.
