This hire will develop the market and build a team that will serve as the program manager for all airport planning and engineering projects in that market. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license may be required; multi-state licensure or ability to obtain is a Ongoing professional development through industry certifications or training REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in airport planning or civil engineering is required, with a strong track record of FAA-funded airport projects. Candidates with 20 or more years of experience are strongly preferred. Demonstrated leadership in managing large-scale airside and landside engineering projects for commercial service and general aviation airports. Proven success in leading multi-disciplinary teams, managing budgets/schedules, and delivering results on time and within scope. In-depth knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars (particularly AC 150 series), Airport Improvement Program (AIP), and other regulatory frameworks. Strong background in engineering design and project management software (e.g., Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and drainage modeling tools). Experience with construction phasing, cost estimation, and coordination with contractors and airport operations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for both internal team collaboration and external client engagement. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and facilitate processes to capture and maintain critical data and documentation for operating sites and merge it with telemetry data to create compelling visualizations. Some knowledge of API connections. DAY IN THE LIFE : A successful candidate will work daily with a peer group, preferably all located in our Houston, Texas office. The group will have a variety of projects related to our installed base of operating sites and service sites and any new sites we may add over the summer. In the first week, office workstations will be assigned and laptops will be issued and loaded with the necessary software. Interns will also receive training regarding Xylem policies, facility and site safety and various aspects of our Heavy Industry service business. In addition to a hiring manager, each intern will have a project coach or mentor, who will provide initial information related to their summer project and check in with them at least once per week to discuss progress and barriers and suggest strategies for moving forward. Interns will also be introduced to other personnel to help them understand the various roles and responsibilities that exist within our organization. Each intern will become part of a network of service and support professionals. Daily activities will involve advancing one or more programs in our Enable72 strategy, a collection of tools and processes dedicated to the idea that systems should be able to run 72 hours or more without an unplanned visit. This strategy relies on preventive maintenance, remote monitoring and process control optimization. It requires setting plans for operation and service, executing to the plan, observing the results and modifying the plan as required for continuous improvement and operational stability. Advancing this work will involve documenting the plans for individual operating sites, making sure the plans remain accurate and accessible, and making sure responsible parties are aware when operation deviates from the plan so that corrective action can be taken promptly. The plans may be captured in drawings, schedules, operating limits, decision trees or various sorts of files. Compliance or deviation will be visualized in reports and communicated to help drive improvements in process execution. This role will have access to physical equipment that passes through our Houston facility and may have a few visits to field operating sites, but the bulk of the work will involve remote monitoring and interfacing with field personnel remotely to gather information and resolve problems. Being able to support and drive results remotely is a core competency in Xylem’s journey toward more efficient operations. At the conclusion of the summer work, each intern will create and present a summary of their work accomplishments to a panel of Xylem managers, including standard work processes they created or improved and recommendations for next steps or future projects. POSITION OVERVIEW: As a Airport Engineering Discipline Lead at LJA Transportation, you will spearhead the planning/engineering market development program in the Southcentral US. This hire will develop the market and build a team that will serve as the program manager for all airport planning and engineering projects in that market. Airport planners and engineers with piloting experience bring a unique and invaluable perspective to airport engineering projects. Their firsthand understanding of aviation operations enhances their ability to design practical, pilot-friendly solutions, setting them apart from competitors. This dual expertise serves as a powerful differentiator, offering airport sponsors the advantage of collaborating with professionals who truly understand the needs of both the airport and the aviators it serves. Additionally, this leader will collaborate with other LJA planning/engineering disciplines to strategically grow the airport planning/engineering footprint across LJA’s Southcentral US Airport market region.

A TYPICAL DAY MIGHT INCLUDE:

  • Provide strategic leadership and technical oversight for aviation planning/engineering projects in the Southcentral US, ensuring alignment with client needs and organizational objectives
  • Serve as the senior leader for complex airport planning and infrastructure projects, including airport master plans, airport layout plans, runways, taxiways, aprons, drainage systems, utility infrastructure, and airside/landside
  • Guide teams through all project phases planning, design, permitting, bidding, and construction support while ensuring compliance with FAA standards and local agency requirements
  • Act as a primary point of contact for key clients, including airport sponsors, FAA and state aviation representatives, and local jurisdictions
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary project teams, fostering a collaborative and high- performance work culture
  • Coordinate with internal departments including CAD design Hub, operational support lead, engineering, environmental, architecture, survey, and GIS to integrate planning initiatives across

REQUIRED EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:
