About Us MarketAxess is on a journey to digitally transform one of the world's largest financial markets, enabling the shift from analog, phone-based trading to a fully electronic marketplace. Why does this matter? Because our platform makes trading fixed-income more accessible, ultimately improving transparency, efficiency, and competition in the marketplace. Changing the way an established industry transacts is no easy feat. There will be twists and turns, because no one's ever done this before. But now, more than 2,000 clients around the world rely on our solutions, and that number is only expected to grow in the years ahead. We know where we're going. How we get there is up to us. Join us and help Take Us There. The Role We're hiring a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our UI Platform team - the group responsible for building and maintaining the shared frontend infrastructure that powers every MarketAxess web application. This includes our data streaming technology, component libraries, developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and desktop integration capabilities. You'll play a key role in shaping and executing the platform roadmap, working closely with other engineering teams to support scalable, high-quality UI development across the firm. This is a full-stack JavaScript leadership role reporting to the Head of X-Pro and UI Platform. A critical success factor is being viewed as a trusted partner and collaborator. We embrace a culture of collaboration and experimentation while striving to encourage all team members to focus on continuous improvement and learning. We openly welcome diverse perspectives and people who are not afraid to challenge assumptions and prior ways of working. Otherwise, how do we innovate, learn, and grow as a team and individuals? How You'll Help Take Us There You will demonstrate competencies across the following key dimensions: Interpreting Business Needs & Supporting Strategy Execution Work closely with the Head of X-Pro and UI Platform to implement and evolve the strategic direction for the UI Platform. You'll contribute input grounded in day-to-day technical realities and collaborate to refine priorities based on feasibility, team feedback, and internal user needs - helping turn strategy into executable plans. Project Execution & Applying Technology Take a hands-on role in designing, building, and delivering the core services your team owns - from implementation through testing, deployment, and support. You'll lead by example in writing high-quality code and collaborating on technical design, while also establishing lightweight, repeatable processes that ensure consistency, productivity, and platform reliability. Providing Architecture Guidance Collaborate directly with other squad leads and engineers to define architectural standards and make pragmatic decisions that balance long-term vision with present-day tradeoffs. Author RFCs and document design choices through ADRs that reflect real implementation paths, not just theoretical ideals. Team Leadership Mentor engineers through hands-on code-pairing, thoughtful code reviews, and unblock the team to keep momentum high. Create an environment where engineers feel ownership of their work, supported in their growth, and aligned with shared technical goals. Assessing Technology Stay engaged in evaluating tools and frameworks by actively experimenting with them, prototyping new ideas, and recommending adoption paths. You'll use your day-to-day involvement to inform your technology choices so they reflect practical realities and not just trends. Cross-functional Collaboration Work directly with Product and Engineering stakeholders to ensure plans are executable and user needs are clearly understood. Collaborate with the Head of UX Design and other partners to turn ideas into tangible platform capabilities, particularly around our shared desktop strategy. What We're Looking For 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading global teams - responsible for setting team goals, conducting performance reviews, managing compensation, and supporting career development Significant hands-on experience as a full-stack JavaScript engineer, with advanced proficiency in both client-side (React, TypeScript) and server-side (Node.js) development - ideally in complex, high-stakes environments like e-trading or financial services. Strong architectural foundation, with practical experience designing and implementing cloud-native systems, event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka), and scalable frontend/backend platforms. Experience working with desktop interoperability frameworks such as Interop.io (formerly Glue42 + Finsemble), OpenFin, or similar technologies, and an understanding of how they support multi-window, multi-app trading workflows. Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams - setting direction, mentoring developers, and maintaining a high bar for code quality, architecture, and delivery. Experience working in agile environments with distributed teams, using tools like JIRA and Confluence to manage delivery and collaboration. Comfort working across hybrid infrastructures (on-prem and cloud), with fluency in modern DevOps practices including CI/CD, monitoring, automated testing (e.g., Playwright, Cypress), and resilience engineering. Solid understanding of API and microservice architectures, structured and unstructured databases, and real-time systems - including logging, monitoring, and process automation. Ability to collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineering leads to turn user needs into platform capabilities, and experience using OKRs or similar frameworks to measure success. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate architectural decisions and influence stakeholders across technical and non-technical domains. A track record of practical, hands-on leadership and problem solving, with a bias toward action and a mindset rooted in experimentation and continuous learning. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
