Engineering Manager, AI - Brex Assistant

Brex Inc.Seattle, WA

$240,000 - $300,000 / year

AI at Brex AI Engineering at Brex is redefining how businesses run their finances by building intelligent, autonomous systems directly into the Brex platform. Our teams develop AI agents that don't just surface insights-they take action, optimizing spend, managing workflows, and making real-time decisions on behalf of our customers. By deeply integrating proprietary financial data with product and platform infrastructure, we're turning complex financial operations into simple, automated experiences and setting a new standard for how modern finance works. What you'll do As an Engineering Manager for the Brex Assistant, you'll lead a team building a consumer-facing conversational AI product that helps customers move faster and with more confidence in moments that matter: approving spend, understanding policy, resolving issues, and making financial decisions without friction. You'll be accountable for both people leadership and product outcomes, guiding how agentic systems are designed, shipped, and operated in production. This is a deeply product-driven role. Success is measured by real customer impact - better expense documentation, stronger policy compliance, and less time spent navigating Brex - not by novelty or research output. Where you'll work This role will be based in our Seattle office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of two coordinated days in the office per week, Wednesday and Thursday. Starting February 2, 2026, we will require three days per week in office - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work! Responsibilities Lead and grow a team of engineers building the end-to-end conversational experience for the Brex Assistant, including outbound system-initiated interactions and inbound chat. Operate at all levels, guiding your team through complex technical challenges while being hands on with code and contributing to design. Own delivery and outcomes for the Assistant roadmap, making and executing hard sequencing decisions for agent capabilities (e.g., memory, preferences, merchant data). Set and uphold a high bar for reliability, correctness, and UX in non-deterministic, agentic systems operating in real-world financial workflows. Partner closely with Product, Design, and adjacent engineering teams (Spend, Expense, Platform) to shape direction and integrate deeply with core Brex workflows. Establish strong team norms and execution standards, balancing velocity with validation, quality control, and operational excellence. Requirements Proven experience leading engineering teams building user-facing products in complex, real-world domains. Strong product judgment, with a track record of making hard tradeoffs and delivering outcomes under real constraints. Experience building and operating systems that must remain reliable despite messy inputs, ambiguity, or non-deterministic behavior. Ability to translate high-level product goals into clear technical direction and execution plans, while mentoring engineers through strong technical and product guidance. Bonus points Development experience with Typescript while leading consumer-facing AI products, especially in regulated or high-stakes domains (finance, healthcare, travel). Direct experience with conversational UX, agents, or other non-deterministic systems in production. Prior experience as a tech lead for agentic systems, particularly in spend or financial workflows. Personal empathy for spend-heavy workflows (frequent travel, recruiting, managing expenses on behalf of a company). Compensation The expected salary range for this role is $240,000 - $300,000. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
