Our software brings the physical and digital worlds together, enabling companies to improve operations, create better products, and empower people in all aspects of their business. Our people make all the difference in our success. Today, we are a global team of nearly 7,000 and our main objective is to create opportunities for our team members to explore, learn, and grow – all while seeing their ideas come to life and celebrating the differences that make us who we are and the work we do possible. The company PTC is a multinational company specialized in software development and probably best known for Creo, previously known as Pro/Engineer. It’s headquartered in Boston, the location of this internship. A few years back, PTC acquired Onshape, an eponymous local CAD product, and absorbed its management structure and staff. Working on Onshape still feels like working for that small company. The Product Onshape is an innovative CAD system conceived by industry experts looking to start over with modern technology for modern customers. They built a cloud system distributed across the globe accessible via web browser or iOS/Android clients. It supports real collaboration between engineers anywhere in the world without the saving of local files or their messy transfer. You’d have the opportunity to gain experience from both old timers and newer hires who they’ve transferred experience to over the years. Your internship You will be working on the Part Studio team, responsible for the core modeling functionality at Onshape. Our goal is to provide each intern a project that will visibly add new functionality to the end product. On your project, you will work the same way as a full-time engineer but with a mentor to guide you through the process. Job Description

About Mux

Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.

We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.

You’ll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premier conference for video engineers in the world.

We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.

We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!

About the Role

We're seeking an exceptional Director of Data & Analytics Engineering to architect the future of data at Mux. This is a unique player-coach role for someone who loves being hands-on with data engineering and analytics while also setting strategic direction and building a high-performing team. You'll split your time between driving critical technical projects yourself and leading a small team of data professionals to transform how Mux captures, models, and leverages data across the organization.

You'll lead the charge to modernize our data architecture, establish robust governance frameworks, and leverage emerging AI capabilities to democratize data access across the company. This role reports directly to the CFO and partners closely with Product, Engineering, FinOps, and GTM leadership to ensure data is a strategic asset that drives business outcomes.

This is specifically for someone who thrives as a player-coach—someone who can design data architecture in the morning and write dbt models in the afternoon, who loves mentoring a small team while staying close to the technical work. This is not a role for someone looking to build and manage a large organization; it's for someone who wants to drive impact through a combination of hands-on technical excellence and strategic leadership.

Preference for candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What You'll Do

Data Architecture & Strategy (50%)

  • Develop and execute comprehensive data strategy for capturing, storing, and utilizing data across product, marketing, operations, and finance

  • Design and implement modern, scalable data pipelines that enable reliable insights

  • Redesign core data models to support new product launches and evolving business complexity

  • Establish and enforce data contracts to prevent unexpected schema changes and downstream failures

  • Lead technical deep-dives to resolve complex data issues and drive continuous improvement

Data Governance & Security

  • Build robust data governance frameworks including policies, standards, ownership models, and change management processes

  • Implement comprehensive dbt testing strategy with focus on data contract validation and primary key uniqueness

  • Collaborate with security teams to establish controls around data access, usage, privacy, and regulatory compliance

  • Drive incident response and root cause analysis for data quality issues

Business Systems & Integration

  • Oversee selection, implementation, and optimization of core business systems (NetSuite, Salesforce, Hubspot, billing systems) to maximize efficiency and ROI

  • Own strategic roadmap for data warehouse (Snowflake), transformation layer (dbt), and analytics platform (Omni)

  • Streamline cross-functional processes ensuring data consistency and integration across platforms

  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies (AI/ML, LLMs) to enhance data quality, accessibility, and automation

Team Leadership (50%)

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of data professionals (Analytics Lead + Analytics Engineer)

  • Balance hands-on technical work with coaching and mentorship to accelerate team growth

  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning

  • Define team priorities, roadmaps, and success metrics aligned with company objectives

  • Recruit and create career development plans for team members as the function grows

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with CFO on financial data infrastructure supporting audit readiness and planning processes

  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, FinOps, and GTM leaders to identify data needs and prioritize projects

  • Present strategic recommendations and technical trade-offs to executive stakeholders

  • Drive consensus across technical and business teams on data investments and architecture decisions

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data architecture roles

  • 3+ years in leadership roles with proven ability to balance hands-on technical work with team management

  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and modern data stack technologies (Snowflake, dbt)

  • Deep experience designing and implementing data pipelines, transformation logic, and data quality frameworks

  • Proven track record of leading data architecture redesigns and migrations at growing companies

  • Strong experience with business system integrations (ERP, CRM, billing systems)

  • Experience in developer tools, API-first companies, or infrastructure businesses

  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Demonstrated success implementing data governance frameworks and quality controls

  • Experience working directly with Finance, Product, and Engineering teams in fast-paced environments

Bonus:

  • Background in video streaming, media, or content delivery networks

  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML tools for data quality, automation, or analytics enhancement

  • Track record of leveraging emerging technologies (LLMs, workflow automation) to solve data challenges

  • Experience with revenue recognition, financial reporting, or audit readiness initiatives

  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations and compliance frameworks

  • Contributions to open-source data tools or active participation in data community

What Makes You Successful:

  • You're equally comfortable architecting a data warehouse and writing dbt transformations

  • You thrive in player-coach roles where you lead through hands-on contribution and mentorship

  • You see technical debt as an opportunity to build more elegant, scalable solutions

  • You balance perfectionism with pragmatism—shipping good solutions quickly while building toward excellence

  • You build strong relationships across functions and communicate with empathy

  • You're energized by teaching others and elevating team capabilities

  • You take ownership of problems end-to-end, from root cause analysis to implementation to validation

  • You're passionate about data quality and governance, not just as process but as enablers of business value

U.S. Benefits

We have a supportive culture that cares about both excellent work and work-life balance.  We have office spaces in Downtown San Francisco, New York City, and London.
