Sofar Ocean logo
Sofar OceanSan Francisco, CA
The Company Sofar is the leading ocean intelligence platform. We've built the world's largest real-time ocean network, turning billions of measurements into insights trusted by scientists, governments, and shipping fleets. Our technology makes the ocean more predictable and sustainable, helping customers save costs, cut emissions, and unlock insights that were once out of reach. The Role We are looking for a product-driven Software Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for our vessel routing web application, Wayfinder. Wayfinder runs onboard the largest shipping vessels in the world, providing critical decision making context for sea captains as they navigate the world's oceans. You will need to develop a deep understanding of our customers, their workflows, and the data they work with every day. You will collaborate with a top-notch team of engineers, ocean scientists, product designers, and maritime experts to translate these user needs into high quality software that empowers our users with data to get their work done more efficiently. You will drive your team to care about the details - great usability, polish, and a sense of delight are needed to make Wayfinder great. Impact You'll Own: You will also hold your team to a high degree of engineering excellence, and contribute to architecture & other parts of the team's technical strategy. There are hard technical problems to solve alongside the product ones - our web client needs to fetch, display, and analyze a large amount of weather information, often over an uncertain internet connection, while staying smooth, performant, and functional. Success in this role looks like building a beautiful and useful application that allows the many humans of the shipping industry to get the full value out of our optimization and weather platform. Wayfinder saves our customers fuel, which directly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It is rare in the software industry to find a role with as much direct climate impact as this one. You will be driven in equal measure by enabling our customers, and helping the planet and ocean. You will also be responsible for recruiting, hiring, and retaining a team of IC engineers. The right candidate is able to evaluate the performance of engineers with various levels of experience, provide coaching and mentorship to help individuals level up their skills, and have difficult conversations when team members are not meeting expectations About you Passionate about building a product with a positive impact on the world 2+ years experience as an Engineering Manager, responsible for people management and feature delivery on a technical team A solid communicator who enjoys collaborating with designers, PMs, scientists, and go-to-market functions A considerate technical leader who can evaluate the tradeoffs between various engineering approaches and guide the team towards the best choice Strong knowledge of how modern cloud applications and the web work Professional experience with modern Typescript, React, and (preferably) Node.js Experience hiring for and leading teams at a fast-growing startup is a plus Experience working with weather data or with the maritime industry generally would be helpful but are not necessary Estimated Salary Range $170,000 - $220,000 The range listed is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may be modified in the future. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, experience, and equity package. Sofar's Commitment to Climate Justice We at Sofar Ocean acknowledge that careers in the marine sciences "... have traditionally been, and remain, non-diverse work environments", thereby limiting the entry and prosperity of underrepresented groups in the space. (Johri et al., 2021) Many of these same groups are disproportionately affected by climate change, and are often excluded from decision making that directly address their interests and needs. We are committed to addressing these climate injustices and highly encourage people who identify as women, LGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) to apply. Employee Conduct It is the responsibility of every employee to contribute to a positive work environment through cooperative and professional interactions with co-workers, customers, and vendors. Equal Employment Opportunity All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other factors prohibited by law.

About Anthropic Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Since launch, the Anthropic API has seen rapid growth and adoption by companies of all sizes to build AI applications with our industry-leading models. We're looking for an experienced engineering leader to lead our API Experience team, responsible for creating a world-class developer experience for the Anthropic API. The team owns the end-to-end flow for using the Anthropic API, everything from documentation and SDKs to prompt engineering and model customization tools. EMs currently hiring: Developer Experience Our Developer Experience team strives to build best in class experiences for developers building on Claude APIs. This includes our SDKs, documentation, console experiences, and observability. As our platform continues to support more and more complex integrations, the Developer Experience team is obsessed with ensuring that developers have high quality tools to set them up for success. Platform Tools Increasingly complex businesses are building integrations on top of the Claude Developer Platform. The Platform Tools team has a goal to spend time with these customers, learn what they need in order to build the integrations they need to build, and improve the platform to support these use cases. Responsibilities: Lead a team in crafting an industry-defining developer experience for building AI applications Collaborate with product and research teams to define the vision and developer roadmap Create clarity for the team and stakeholders in an ambiguous and evolving environment Work cross functionally to design clear interfaces and processes for shipping products that span many teams Take an inclusive, equitable approach to hiring and coaching top technical talent, and maintain a high performing team You may be a good fit if you have: 5+ years of experience as an engineering manager A background in fullstack development - comfortable diving into various technology stacks frontend, backend, and at times deeper infrastructure. A strong product mindset, able to navigate through ambiguity, and willingness to wear multiple hats (e.g. product management, design) Experience recruiting, scaling, and retaining engineering talent in a high growth environment Excellent leadership and communication skills Demonstrated success in building a culture of belonging, and of product and engineering excellence Startup experience, building products from zero to one Experience building APIs and/or developer products for external developers Strong candidates may also have: Expertise in modern web development stacks (React, Next.js, etc) Experience working on AI/ML products Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Location Preference: Preference will be given to candidates based in the SF and Seattle areas as this position is part of an SF based team. The expected base compensation for this position is below. Our total compensation package for full-time employees includes equity, benefits, and may include incentive compensation. Annual Salary: $320,000-$405,000 USD Logistics Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience. Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact - advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI - rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
